Alonan - Magic

Magic in the world of Alonan is a curious thing. It is not inherently natural; rather, the first channelers were ones who had been inadvertantly exposed to large levels of the destructive power that destroyed Norazon and created the Maelstrom. Since then, the ability to channel these strange powers has proven to be able to be passed down from generation to generation, though the odds are low.

The following is a summary of what channelers can do:

The ability of a channeler is a random and pre-set level. It varies for everyone, and your position in life has no bearing on your strength as a channeler. Since using the powers gained from the mysterious force causes strain for the human body, it is hard to channel more than a little bit at once, or over long periods of time. Stronger channelers will be able to withstand the strain more, and can even do more at once, or for a longer period of time, than weaker channelers.

All channelers can sense other channelers once the ability has manifested itself. This usually occurs during late adolescence, around the 19 to 23 year old range. For this reason, and because most people who can channel are not aware of what it is and either panic or never learn that they can use it, that the channelers of Mal Alroth conduct regular searches throughout the six regions (their influence and authority has extended far since the War of Six).

(As a side-note, it is often wondered why people now can be born in any region with the ability to channel. This is because the first people to be exposed to the divine force that destroyed Norazon were unaware of what was happening, and so fled back to their homes. Thousands of men and women were 'lost' this way, gone before the channelers of Mal Alroth could form as a group and a haven for their kind.)

Channelers most often have direct influence over the four basic elements. While seemingly weak, these elements can be combined into truly dangerous or amazing powers. Master channelers of Mal Alroth have been known to add a fifth element after years of intensive training. Known as 'Soul,' this element stems directly from the channeler, and can be used to further combine elements into marvels of creation and destruction.

It is also said that the best of the best at Mal Alroth can gain a sixth element, a random force of nature that allows for the ability to do things that defy imagination. Such rumors are often scolded by others are silly.

Channelers are not well-liked in any city or kingdom but their city and tower of Mal Alroth, and are considered meddling and arrogant to anyone else.
